Nestled along the shores of Vallecito Lake and the Pine River, 5 Branches Camper Park offers visitors a front-row seat to the rugged beauty of southwest Colorado. One of the best ways to soak it all in? Hit the trails! The surrounding San Juan National Forest is a hiker’s paradise, with everything from gentle lakeside strolls to heart-pumping alpine climbs. Here are five must-try trails within a short drive from 5 Branches—perfect for wildlife watchers, scenic seekers, and adventure junkies alike.

1. Vallecito Creek Trail (Katie's all time favorite!)

Distance: Up to 12 miles round-trip (choose your distance)

Difficulty: Moderate

Trailhead: Vallecito Campground, just a few minutes from 5 Branches

This trail is a local favorite for good reason. Following the rushing Vallecito Creek, the trail meanders through dense pine forest, past rocky cliffs, and across charming footbridges. You’ll be treated to the sound of water throughout most of the hike, and it’s common to spot deer, marmots, and the occasional black bear (from a safe distance, of course). Go as far as you like before turning back—the trail stays relatively moderate the whole way.

2. Pine River Trail (a.k.a. Los Pinos Trail)

Distance: Up to 20 miles one-way (out-and-back style)

Difficulty: Moderate to Strenuous (depending on distance)

Trailhead: At the north end of Vallecito Reservoir

A true wilderness experience awaits you on this trail that hugs the Pine River. Perfect for those seeking solitude, the Pine River Trail gradually climbs into the Weminuche Wilderness, offering dramatic views, peaceful meadows, and plenty of wildflowers in the spring and summer. Bring your fishing gear or pack a picnic for a riverside break.

First 3 miles are relatively flat. First 2 miles are private property with no river access.

3. Lake Eileen Trail

Distance: 3.2 miles round-trip

Difficulty: Moderate

Trailhead: North end of Vallecito Reservoir

Don’t let the short distance fool you—this trail packs a punch with some steep sections, but the payoff is well worth it. The path winds through beautiful stands of aspen and spruce before delivering you to the serene alpine waters of Lake Eileen. In the fall, the golden aspens are absolutely show-stopping, and you might catch a glimpse of elk moving through the trees.

4. Cave Basin Trail

Distance: About 6 miles round-trip

Difficulty: Strenuous

Trailhead: End of Middle Mountain Road

For the adventurous hiker looking for a bit of a challenge, Cave Basin is your trail. This less-traveled route ascends steeply through high country forest to a stunning basin ringed with granite peaks and sprinkled with wildflowers. You’ll want sturdy hiking boots and plenty of water, but the sense of accomplishment—and the views—make it all worthwhile.

5. North Canyon Trail

Distance: 2.2 miles one-way

Difficulty: Easy to Moderate

Trailhead: Southwest side of Vallecito Reservoir

Ideal for families and those looking for a quick nature fix, this trail offers a gradual climb through mixed conifer and aspen forest, with occasional views of the reservoir sparkling below. It’s especially beautiful in early morning or late afternoon light, when birds are most active and the forest feels alive.
